Ryan Gilliam (he/him) has worked at Polygon for nearly seven years. He primarily spends his time writing guides for massively popular games like Diablo 4 & Destiny 2.

Cult of the Lamb offers a few side quest distractions to keep you busy while you build your cult. Most of these just ask you to acquire certain resources from Crusades, but one quest in particular focuses on a mysterious character: the evil, nameless, red fox.

In this guide, we’ll tell you everything you need to know about this diabolical figure, and show you where to find them in each of the game’s four main areas.

Who is the red fox, what do they do, and how do you find them?

The evil fox NPC won’t ever give you their name, and they only appears at night in certain areas. There is a moon-shaped icon hidden in Pilgrim’s Passage, Spore Grotto, Smuggler’s Sanctuary, and Midas’s Cave. If you visit these symbols at night, you’ll have the option to “Peer into the Darkness,” which will summon the cloaked figure.

In exchange for life (a fish, your followers, and even a trusted NPC), the fox will give you a piece of a Holy Talisman after each interaction. Once you have four pieces of a Holy Talisman, you’ll be able to purchase a new Fleece from your chapel. Fleece are like armor, and have a variety of unique effects that will impact your Crusades.

Pilgrim’s Passage

You’ll unlock the Pilgrim's Passage area during your adventure through Darkwood, the first Crusade location in Cult of the Lamb.

Go to the Pilgrim’s Passage at night and walk to the end of the dock. Hit the “Peer Into the Darkness” prompt to summon the fox. They’ll talk to you for a bit and then ask for a fish. Give them one and they’ll disappear, giving you part of a Holy Talisman.

Spore Grotto

You’ll unlock the Spore Grotto area while adventuring through Anura, the second Crusade location in Cult of the Lamb.

Go to the Spore Grotto at night and walk up to the vendor on the left, who sells decorations for your cult. To the left of the vendor, by the map’s black border, you’ll find the moon icon. “Peer Into the Darkness” to summon the fox again. They’ll ask for one of your followers this time. Oblige them and you’ll get another Holy Talisman piece.

As usual, we recommend giving over an elderly follower if possible, as they’re no longer of much use to the cult.

Smuggler’s Sanctuary

You’ll unlock the Smuggler’s Sanctuary area while adventuring through Anchordeep, the third Crusade location in Cult of the Lamb.

Go to the Smuggler’s Sanctuary at night and walk up to the card vendor carpet on the right. Walk past the vendor onto the dock. “Peer Into the Darkness” to summon the fox for the third time. This time they’ll ask for two followers. Give them over and you’ll get yet another piece of a Holy Talisman.

Midas’s Cave

Midas’s Cave is the final location in Cult of the Lamb, and you’ll unlock it while adventuring through Silk Cradle, the fourth Crusade location.

Go to Midas’s Cave at night and walk to the back. Turn right at where you usually sacrifice followers to Midas, and walk to the edge of the map, just under the piles of gold. Interact with the final moon emblem and “Peer Into the Darkness” to summon the fox.

[Ed’s note: The following contains a light spoiler for some Cult of the Lamb plot.]

This time, the fox will ask for Ratau, your mentor who first taught you to build a cult for The One Who Waits. Losing Ratau doesn’t actually affect your cult at all, and is more of an emotional hit than a practical one. However, you’ll lose the ability to play Knucklebones with Ratau, so make sure you do that before sacrificing him — you’ll unlock a Tarot card after beating him for the first time.

Once the fox takes Ratau, he’ll offer another Holy Talisman piece and give you a new follower form. He’ll then say goodbye, and disappear into the darkness forever.

Note: If you complete this quest before taking on the game’s final boss, they’ll remark on your ruthlessness and ability to succeed where Ratau failed.
