Genshin Impact guide: How to upgrade your character’s Constellations

You’re going to need some dupes

Ryan Gilliam (he/him) has worked at Polygon for nearly seven years. He primarily spends his time writing guides for massively popular games like Diablo 4 & Destiny 2.

In Genshin Impact, every character has their own Constellation, which acts as a kind of skill tree. When you unlock part of that character’s Constellation, you’ll earn a new effect, which impacts an existing skill or offers a completely new perk. But you can’t just unlock the Constellation with XP like in other games. In Genshin Impact, you’ll need special resources: Memories for the Traveler, and Steller Fortunas for everyone else.

Here’s how to upgrade your Constellations in Genshin Impact.

How to upgrade The Traveler

The Traveler is the in-game name for your main character — the twin you pick at the start of the game.

Unlike other characters, you cannot get The Traveler from Wishes (the game’s name for gachapon pulls). To unlock their Constellation, you’ll need Memories. This is a special material that you can only get in a few places: the main story quests, Adventure Rank packages, and the Souvenir shops.

You’ll need time to complete these, so you can’t really target them. Just play the game and you’ll collect them all in time.

Note that the The Traveler has two forms currently available in-game: Anemo (wind) and Geo (earth). That means they have two different Constellations to upgrade, and you’ll need two different kinds of Memories to unlock the entire Constellation.

To upgrade everyone else’s Constellations, you’ll need a separate currency: Stellar Fortunas. These Stellar Fortunas are specific to each character. For example, you can only unlock Razor’s Constellation with the Razor Stellar Fortuna.

To get Stellar Fortunas, you need to receive a duplicate of that character from a Wish. Since you already own that character, you’ll instead get a Stellar Fortuna with their name on it. You can then go into their menu and apply it to their Constellation to get a new perk.

This means that to unlock a character and upgrade their entire Constellation, you’ll need to pull them from a Wish seven times.

Thankfully once you upgrade a Constellation, it stays upgraded forever.
