First PlayStation 5 game announced is ‘looter-slasher’ Godfall

Gearbox is publishing the PS5 and PC game

Godfall is the first game confirmed for the PlayStation 5, and will launch alongside the new console over the holidays in 2020. The new “looter-slasher” will be published by Gearbox Publishing, and is being developed by the team at Counterplay Games.

Counterplay’s ambitious game is described as a AAA-quality, third-person, real-time melee game that is “played better together with friends” according to its website. Developed in Unreal Engine 4, the game will be a PS5 console exclusive title and release on PC via the Epic Games Store.

“We’re innovating with Godfall to provide a fresh take on action RPGs by rewarding skill-based offensive gameplay and making every hit matter,” Keith Lee, the creative director of Godfall and CEO of Counterplay Games, said in a press release. “Namely, we want to feed into that yearning for the next best piece in your character build, so we plan to provide plenty of loot to players to ensure there’s meaningful impact to gameplay and play styles.”

The CGI trailer that aired tonight during The Game Awards, which we’ve embedded above, shows a trio of heroes fleeing a crumbling building. They wear ornate armor and appear to have animalistic features underneath their intricate helmets. Each one holds an enchanted weapon that appears to be powered by elemental magics. Above them a multi-headed dragon looms in a pillar of light.

Counterplay is an independent studio based in California. Their first and so far only product is a hybrid collectible card game and tabletop strategy game called Duelyst, released in 2016. It has very positive reviews on Steam. The team includes veterans of multiple AAA games, including Call of Duty, Destiny 2, Diablo 3, Evolve, Gears 5, God of War, Halo 5, Horizon Zero Dawn, Left 4 Dead 2, Overwatch, and Ratchet & Clank, and Titanfall 2.
