Knives Out 2 and 3 are now Netflix exclusives

Knives Out, the hit 2019 whodunnit from Star Wars: The Last Jedi director Rian Johnson, is getting two sequels, and they’re now Netflix exclusives.

According to Variety, Netflix bought the sequel rights at the absolutely staggering price of $450 million. The aggressive sum locks down the streamer as the home for two more mysteries starring Daniel Craig as Detective Benoit Blanc, with writer-director Rian Johnson staying on board. The next film is expected to shoot in Greece later this year.

Knives Out was a clever throwback to Agatha Christie-style murder mysteries, with all their trappings: a cast full of eccentric people stuck in one location together, each with their own petty motives for murder most foul, and an eccentric detective determined to expose their secrets and find the truth — often with a tremendously fun parlor room scene where the audience gets to piece it all together. The film dazzled at the box office, grossing $311 million on a $40 million budget, making it extremely profitable — and with an Oscar nomination for best original screenplay, the movie was also a critical success.

No date has been set for either Knives Out sequel, but Johnson remains in-demand and quite busy — he recently was announced as the director of Peacock’s forthcoming mystery TV series Poker Face starring Russian Doll’s Natasha Lyonne, and who knows, maybe one day his Star Wars trilogy announced in 2017 will exit development hell and finally become real. Until then, we’ll always have Benoit Blanc.
