Hitman 3’s latest trailer shows off the trilogy in VR

Agent 47 in 3 whole dimensions

Cass Marshall is a news writer focusing on gaming and culture coverage, taking a particular interest in the human stories of the wild world of online games.

A new trailer for Hitman 3 is from an unfamiliar perspective: Players will be able to tackle all of the World of Assassination trilogy in virtual reality, and the gameplay footage here gives us a much broader glance at what that’ll look like in action on PlayStation VR. (You’ll have to watch it directly on YouTube here, since the video is age-restricted due to, y’know, assassinations.)

We get to see through Agent 47’s eyes as he hacks, garrotes, and stalks his way through a variety of stunning international locales — and also as he takes the time to stop and smell the roses or read a newspaper while waiting for his target to pass by. Hitman levels showcased in the trailer include Paris, Sapienza, and Hokkaido from 2016’s Hitman; Hawke’s Bay and Miami from Hitman 2; and Dubai and Dartmoor from Hitman 3.

There are some pretty great moments in the trailer, like punching a security guard right in the face. That’s definitely a little more satisfying in the first person, especially since Agent 47’s hands and arms are fully visible and animated. There are also a couple of quick previews of set-pieces and scenarios that we can expect to see in the final game. My personal favorite is shooting a man with a tranq gun for a nonlethal kill that quickly turns lethal as he tumbles off the edge of a catwalk into oblivion. Oops!

Hitman 3 will be released Jan. 20 on Google Stadia, Nintendo Switch (via cloud streaming), PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Windows PC (via the Epic Games Store), Xbox One, and Xbox Series X. PSVR headsets are compatible with both PS4 and PS5, but only the PS4 version of Hitman 3 will offer the VR mode. Purchases of the PS5 version will include a PS4 copy for free, IO Interactive said on Jan. 8.

Update (Jan. 8): We’ve added a clarification about PSVR support in Hitman 3.
