Bungie reveals everything going away in Destiny 2: Beyond Light

Players will see a lot of activities and locations enter the DCV

Ryan Gilliam (he/him) has worked at Polygon for nearly seven years. He primarily spends his time writing guides for massively popular games like Diablo 4 & Destiny 2.

In June, Bungie revealed Destiny 2: Beyond Light, the game’s 2021 and 2022 expansions, and the new Destiny Content Vault — commonly called the DCV. The DCV houses all “retired” content from Destiny, including stuff from the original game. In a blog post on Thursday, Bungie revealed everything that players will lose access to when Beyond Light is released Nov. 10.

We’ll see the Cosmodrome location leave the DCV and come to Destiny 2 later this year, with the Vault of Glass raid also coming out of the DCV sometime in 2021. But before we see the return of some beloved old content, Bungie will retire some of Destiny 2’s current content and move it into the DCV to make room.

Here’s a complete breakdown.

Patrol Destinations

When Bungie launches Destiny 2: Beyond Light on Nov. 10, the studio will remove four major planets from the game. Players will be unable to do quests or activities, or wander around, on the following destinations:

  • Io
  • Mars
  • Mercury
  • Titan

Strikes

Strikes that take place on the aforementioned planets will also leave Destiny 2 with Beyond Light.

The blog post does mention that the Will of Crota Strike in the Cosmodrome will return on Nov. 10. There will be one new Strike on Europa that we know about. And the Devil’s Lair and Fallen S.A.B.E.R. Strikes will also return to the Cosmodrome sometime in the next year.

Here’s a complete list of Strikes leaving the game with Beyond Light:

  • The Pyramidion
  • The Festering Core
  • Savathun’s Song
  • Strange Terrain
  • Will of the Thousands
  • Tree of Probabilities
  • A Garden World

Gambit

Bungie will change major aspects of Gambit this fall, although we don’t know exactly how yet. The studio revealed that Gambit and Gambit Prime will become one mode: “a single round face off with tweaked Blockers, heavier mote drain, and some changes to the Primeval fight,” wrote Destiny community manager Cozmo. The studio said it will reveal more about the game mode closer to Nov. 10.

Unlike Strikes, Gambit will feature maps from retired destinations, including both Mars and Titan. While the studio hasn’t confirmed this yet, it seems likely that the Reckoner title could go away before Beyond Light, meaning that players have a limited window to finish it.

Here’s a complete list of maps going away with Beyond Light:

  • Cathedral of Scars
  • Kell’s Grave

Crucible

Bungie will very slightly pare down the Crucible, taking a few maps and modes out of the game. Cozmo insisted that none of these changes will affect the Trials of Osiris mode, and players will still go to the Lighthouse when they get a Flawless card — even though Mercury is leaving the game. Like Gambit, the Crucible will still house maps on retired planets.

Here’s a complete list of maps going away with Beyond Light:

  • Meltdown
  • Solitude
  • Retribution
  • The Citadel
  • Emperor’s Respite
  • Equinox
  • Eternity
  • Firebase Echo
  • Gambler’s Ruin
  • Legion’s Gulch
  • Vostok

Here’s a complete list of Crucible modes going away with Beyond Light:

  • Supremacy
  • Countdown
  • Lockdown
  • Breakthrough
  • Doubles
  • Momentum Control
  • Scorched

Dungeons

Bungie will not remove any of the game’s three dungeons with Beyond Light. However, the Prophecy dungeon will disappear for a while so Bungie can fix a technical problem. The studio will reveal later when it expects Prophecy to return, but the dungeon isn’t going into the DCV.

Raids

With Beyond Light, Bungie will completely remove the Leviathan spaceship, including all activities associated with it. At Beyond Light’s launch, players will only have the Last Wish and Garden of Salvation raids. But shortly after Nov. 10, Bungie will launch the Europa raid, which takes place in the Deep Stone Crypt. And players will be able to replay the Vault of Glass raid sometime in 2021.

Here’s a complete list of raids disappearing with Beyond Light:

  • Leviathan
  • Eater of Worlds
  • Spire of Starts
  • Crown of Sorrow
  • Scourge of the Past

Exotics

There are plenty of Exotic quests in Destiny 2 that require certain locations and certain activity completions. With four planets and several raids going away when Beyond Light debuts, some Exotics will become unobtainable via their usual methods. Those missing Exotics will enter what’s called the Memorial Kiosk, a new system that Bungie will reveal at a later date.

Some of Destiny 2’s Exotic Catalysts have the same problem, and many will disappear. For some Catalysts, players will only need to acquire them before Nov. 10; others, they’ll need to fully complete. But even if a Catalyst disappears, players who’ve unlocked it can still use it without issue.

Here’s a complete list of Exotic quests leaving with Beyond Light:

  • Sturm
  • MIDA Multi-Tool
  • Rat King
  • Legend of Acrius
  • Sleeper Simulant
  • Polaris Lance
  • Worldline Zero
  • Ace of Spades
  • The Last Word
  • Le Monarque
  • Jotunn
  • Izanagi’s Burden
  • Thorn
  • Lumina
  • Truth
  • Bad Juju

Here’s a complete list of Exotic Catalysts that won’t be available after Beyond Light:

  • Bad Juju
  • The Huckleberry
  • Izanagi’s Burden
  • Legend of Acrius
  • Polaris Lance
  • Skyburner’s Oath
  • Sleeper Simulant
  • Telesto
  • Outbreak Perfected
  • Whisper of the Worm
  • Worldline Zero

Campaigns and other activities

With the introduction of the DCV, Bungie will remove lots of different activities across different categories. This includes some of the Year 2 updates like Black Armory.

We’ve compiled a final list of noteworthy items leaving Destiny 2 with Beyond Light:

  • The Red War campaign
  • The Trials of Osiris campaign
  • The Warmind campaign
  • Cinematic on vaulted locations
  • Adventures and patrols on vaulted locations
  • Lost Sectors on vaulted locations
  • The Whisper secret mission
  • The Zero Hour secret mission
