Ghost of Tsushima gets online multiplayer later this year

Party up with three others, playing four warriors on story missions

Ghost of Tsushima will get a new cooperative multiplayer mode later this year, one that expands the lore of the PlayStation 4 action-adventure set in feudal Japan.

Ghost of Tsushima: Legends, as the mode is called, will be a free download for all who have the game. “It’s a separate mode that doesn’t follow Jin or the companions from his journey,” said Darren Bridges, a designer with Sucker Punch Productions, “but instead focuses on four warriors who have been built up as legends in stories told by the people of Tsushima.”

Whereas the game’s main campaign highlights the natural beauty of Tsushima Island’s open-world environment, Legends “is haunting and fantastical,” Bridges said, “with locations and enemies inspired by Japanese folk tales and mythology.”

Ghost of Tsushima: Legends is exclusively a co-op multiplayer mode. It supports matchmaking for groups of 2-4 players. Players may choose from four character classes: Samurai, Hunter, Ronin, and Assassin. Sucker Punch says it will divulge more about the classes’ capabilities later.

With them, players may embark on a series of story missions of escalating difficulty. They may also play Survival missions, in which they take on waves of enemies, including new ones with supernatural abilities. There will also be a raid arriving shortly after Legends’ launch.

Ghost of Tsushima launched July 17 on PlayStation 4. We praised its unique setting and detailed presentation of that place and time, but found its gameplay rote and generic when compared to open-world titles of the past four years.
