Lilo & Stitch live-action adaptation ordered by Disney

Lilo & Stitch is the latest movie to get the hybrid live-action treatment from Disney, according to a new report from The Hollywood Reporter.

There aren’t too many details about the film, according to the Reporter, but Dan Lin and Jonathan Eirich, who are working on Disney’s live-action Aladdin movie, are set to produce. Disney has also remade animated classics like Alice in Wonderland and The Jungle Book using the same kind of hybrid CGI/live-action technology.

Lilo & Stitch was released in 2002, and is one of the studio’s most beloved films. It follows a girl named Lilo and her blue koala bear-like alien friend, Stitch. Stitch is designed as a force of total destruction, but quickly learns the meaning and power of friendship and family throughout his adventures in Hawaii.

Disney has worked on several sequels throughout the years (all released as direct-to-video), and a couple of TV shows. The big question is whether the new Lilo & Stitch will head to theaters upon release, or will become a major exclusive for Disney’s streaming service. The streaming service is set to launch sometime late next year.
