The sequel to 2009’s Avatar, the highest-grossing film (worldwide box office) of all time, was originally expected in 2014. In March, director James Cameron, noting that the 2009 original took more than four years to make, said the sequel was delayed again from a revised 2018 date.

“What people have to understand is that this is a cadence of releases,” Cameron said in March. “So we’re not making Avatar 2. We’re making Avatar 2, 3, 4 and 5. It’s an epic undertaking.”

Previously, Cameron has accounted for the slow pace of development by saying he was waiting for filmmaking technology to advance to a point where it could properly display what he has in mind.

Avatar 2 was delayed in 2012 to 2015; in 2015 to 2017; and then 2017 to 2018. Avatar fans can tide themselves over with a visit to the new attraction at Disney’s Animal Kingdom, opening in May. It got a mildly terrifying ad preceding the Oscars in February.
