Tekken X Street Fighter 'still in development,' says producer

Samit Sarkar (he/him) is Polygon’s deputy managing editor. He has more than 16 years of experience covering video games, movies, television, and technology.

Tekken X Street Fighter, the crossover fighting game from Namco Bandai, is "still in development," and there are a number of reasons why the studio hasn't said much about the game, said producer Katsuhiro Harada in an interview with Siliconera.

Namco Bandai and Capcom simultaneously announced Capcom's Street Fighter X Tekken and Namco Bandai's Tekken X Street Fighter during San Diego Comic-Con 2010. Capcom launched the former game on PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and Windows PC last spring, and on PlayStation Vita last fall. Harada said in April 2012 that development on Tekken X Street Fighter was "not quite 10 percent" complete.

According to Harada, the Tekken X Street Fighter team hasn't provided updates since then because patches for Street Fighter X Tekken were still in development "until recently" — and because the latter game had an "unexpected" reception.

"It was not just Tekken fans and Street Fighter fans merging, there seems to be a whole new community growing around that title that wasn't playing either of the titles up until that point," said Harada to Siliconera. "That was very unexpected, but quite cool. It's something we want to take care and grow."

Harada continued, "Rather than throw out [Tekken X Street Fighter] right away while those people are still interested in [Street Fighter X Tekken], we are looking for the right time because we are still developing [Tekken X Street Fighter]."

Siliconera points out that in the interval since the announcement of Tekken X Street Fighter in July 2010, Namco Bandai has released five Tekken games: Tekken Hybrid, Tekken 3D: Prime Edition, Tekken Tag Tournament 2, Tekken Card Tournament and Tekken Revolution. The company has yet to confirm platforms or a release window for Tekken X Street Fighter.
