AMD Suggests They Are Helping Sony And Microsoft Build Consoles With New Tech
It feels like only yesterday that we were all debating the theoretical specs of the Orbis and Durango, the codenames for the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One respectively, and now we're already talking about the graphical capabilities of their successors. Although Microsoft had already confirmed their next-gen console and Sony has more or less talked around the final years of the PS4, AMD CEO Lisa Su is giving us some more hints about what to expect.
In an interview with CNBC's Jim Cramer, Su said that they are working with Microsoft and Sony on their consoles, and that "they have their owns secret sauce that we're helping them do." While the comment could be read as a description of the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, there's no real way to interpret the secret sauce comment about either of them. Considering the level of differentiation rumored in the next generation of hardware, Su might have let slip more than she intended.
While AMD used to also power Nintendo's consoles, the two split in favor of Nvidia's mobile technology for the Switch this generation.
"People need more computing horsepower," Su told Cramer. "Just think about gaming these days with double-digit growth. Whether you're talking about game consoles or you're about PC gaming or you're talking cloud gaming, all of these markets like higher computing power and that's a great place for us to be."
Su also mentioned that AMD is investing heavily in gaming technology that might not be seen for three to five years. It is unclear if she means in AMD's standalone GPU market or within consoles, but Su seems confident that it will be a good long term decision.
If she is right and it takes about three years, that puts it around 2021, which is when Sony says it expects new PlayStation hardware to launch.
