Lil Nas X to Kick Off TikTok’s First NFT Collection

TikTok is officially entering the NFT game with “TikTok Top Moments,” a collection of NFTs dropping this month from platform-defining creators like Lil Nas X and Bella Poarch.

The NFTs will exist on the Ethereum blockchain and will be powered by the protocol Immutable X, which claims that all of its NFTs are 100% carbon neutral. Each drop, which takes place here, pairs a TikTok creator with a prominent NFT artist, and includes both a one-of-one NFT memorializing a viral TikTok video as well as other limited-edition NFTs.

On Oct. 6, Lil Nas X — whose “Old Town Road” was arguably the first TikTok-born smash — will fittingly be the first creator to drop official TikTok NFTs, made in partnership with the artist Rudy Willingham. The drop will NFT-ify a stop-motion TikTok video Willingham created in tribute to Lil Nas X’s “MONTERO (Call Me By Your Name).”

The rest of the NFTs will drop weekly through the end of October. Drops include “Bored In the House” quarantine anthem creator Curtis Roach linking up with COIN ARTIST; virtual rapper FNMeka collaborating with virtual shoe and collectible creator RTFKT; a collaboration between TikTok creator Jess Marciante, serial entrepreneur Gary Vaynerchuk and programmer x0r; and both “Build a Bitch” singer Bella Poarch and “Kombucha girl” Brittany Broski working with Grimes on their own separate NFTs.

In a press release, TikTok touted NFTs as a “creator empowerment tool” and claimed that the “proceeds will largely go directly to the creators and NFT artists involved.”

“The creation that happens on TikTok helps drive culture and starts trends beyond the platform,” TikTok global head of marketing Nick Tran added in a statement. “As the creator economy continues to grow, we’re continually looking for new and differentiated ways to support our creators. Now, fans can own a moment on TikTok that helped shape the internet while supporting some of their favorite creators. We’re excited to see how our community and NFT communities engage with some of the internet’s most beloved cultural milestones.”

Each TikTok video in the collection also will be presented at “Infinite Duets: Co-Creating on TikTok,” a new exhibit at New York’s Museum of the Moving Image in Queens, N.Y., now through Nov. 5. Meanwhile, earlier this week, TikTok announced that it has crossed 1 billion monthly active users.
