Call of Duty: WWII - Beta Impressions

Creaking

He touched the black heart of a mod
This starting shotgun seems rotten. Constantly getting outgunned within 4 feet by garands and the like. Also, what the hell is with the post match? Makes you stare at the scoreboard for a minute before letting you do anything, then gives you like 10 seconds before starting the match.

The load times in this beta are terrible. Probably the worst I've ever seen a CoD game. I would hope the final game is not like this.

Yeah, I really wish there was some more urgency in the voice overs. I don't know how to describe it, but it sounds like everyone's alright with being there? It's not that I need an ultra-gritty depiction of WW2, but the soldiers should at least sound concerned about all of the gunfire and grenades. I watched Hacksaw Ridge recently, wasn't that great of a movie, but it was really effective at intense battle scenes. By comparison CoDWW2 feels more like another day on the job rather than an actual battle. Once again I don't need Hacksaw-level intensity, but I expect some sense of concern.

One thing I do like about the move to a more grounded settings is they feel comfortable dropping all of the garishness from Black Ops 3 (and I assume IW, but I haven't gotten around to that one yet). Was so sick of wasting time at the end of a match watching characters in over-the-top costumes doing these lame taunts while spouting off some cheesy voiceline. WW2 has been more tonally consistent in that regard.

Granted this game does have customization items, but I don't expect to have to watch characters pelvic thrust or flip me off and tell me I'm shit when the match is over.

I've not had one full squad in the ten or so TDM's I've played which is leading to a very frustrating experience. Just getting ganked repeatedly by opposition players. Anyone else having this issue?

I wouldn't consider myself a good COD player but I have enjoyed previous entries something about this just feels a bit off. Can't really put my finger on it.

Enjoying the sound design though, it's great.

Not sure how I feel about this yet. I'm enjoying myself more than IW, that's for sure.

War, in concept, seemed awesome. In execution... Well, let's just say that out of around 10 matches, I've only moved into phase three one time since my teammates actually wanted to win instead of have a sniper fight.

I redeemed my preorder code for... The code on the website months ago, yet I haven't had an email back for my beta key. Everytime I try and log into the beta site, it just says "You've already entered a beta key"

Asking this myself. Seems like a bug or its not available in the beta.

I'm confused on something. For Infantry, it said at the next rank (which I hit) that I would get an additional primary weapon attachment. I don't see a 3rd attachment slot. Am I missing something?

Yeah i had that problem. Just have to switch your division to something else, then back to Infantry.

Hmm, I've won on both sides almost every time. The only thing I feel that needs some tweaking is the bridge. There needs to be more cover.

Ughhhhh I really wanted to like this but I don't think I do. There's something cheap/low quality feeling about all of it. The map design is super iffy. Not feeling this tiny maps for a WW2 game.

The divisions I feel like take away some COD charm.

Positives are spawning was great I thought, some guns felt good and the guns are better than sci-fi nonsense. But yeah. Shrug.

Man, I thought it might be time to get another CoD since they're back in WW2, but ugh. I just can't. Playing the PS4 beta and its just not for me anymore.

Its the video game equivalent of getting too old to go to the club. Don't like the lines, don't like the crowds, don't like the stupid bunny-hopping, quick/no-scoping, 1-shotting, nonsense anymore.

Will rent for the campaign, but I'm done trying to get back into the multi.

Liking the flow of combat. Sprinting is limited and encourages more poking around cover. You either gotta use your teammates for covering fire or outflank the other player(s). It's very tense and absolute fun when you got long standoffs (10 seconds lol) where it ends in a chase lol. And the sound whoring is real.

Overall I'm enjoying the core combat and map design. War is either great or terrible depending on your teammates.

I might just spend all my time in this game playing War mode when it comes out. Holding out on the tank segment on defense, with two people manning the buildable machine guns, absolutely unstoppable.

Impressions from watching Twitch :)

- Maps are tiny: Mice trapped in a shoebox, not a lot of strategic game play
- Nade spam is *constant* and super effective due to tiny map size nade die spawn nade die spawn nade ... It's rainin' nades baby!
- SMGs seem a bit OP

+ kill streaks did not rule the day or make things crazy. No remote control cars zipping around or any zany stuff like that. UAVs, mortars, and bomb drop is all I saw. Seemed really good. Thumbs up!

Those are just criticisms from watching, I haven't played yet. Steamers seemed to mostly be digging it tho so I'll call that a positive too heh

Suggestions:

- More medium to medium-large maps to establish more flow and strategy. Hopefully game will ship with some larger maps suiting more styles of game play

- Some sort of cool down on grenades, maybe like 15 seconds after you spawn or just a global 1 minute cooldown or something.

It feels very Overwatch-ish to me, only in this, I've had much more luck with my teammates actually playing the objective.

It's not bad but does anyone feel the axis is almost an afterthought in this game. The classes you choose from are all on the allies and when your in the lobby no way to identify who's allies and axis. When you join the axis the voice acting of your team announcer is not that convincing compared to world at war back in the day. Overall it's decent but it's cod.

Except nah. The Division system is basically the Rigs from Infinite Warfare, in that it gives you access to specific Division (IW's Rigs) skill or whatever it's called (IW's Rig trait) exclusive to that Division. Then you choose a Basic Training (aka a Perk) that can be used by any class. There are also more scorestreaks than the ones we see, they just aren't available in the beta, at least not yet. And many of them are just a WWII version of a scorestreak reward we've seen before, and maybe some new ones.

While there's definitely some new elements like the HQ, let's not pretend like most of this stuff isn't just a re-skin or rework of a previous feature from past games.

Yes, basic training is essentially a perk, my bad.

However, Divisions are nothing at all like rigs. Rigs basically gave you an "ultimate" ability, which (in most cases) was a highly powerful weapon/ability. Divisions is essentially the other "half" of the Perk replacement. They are essentially a group perks. I think the fact that you don't have these overpowered rigs/specialists running around with multikill weapons every few minutes makes the game much more balanced.

Just played a few rounds. I'm okay with the stripped down mobility (though I consider Advanced Warfare to be peak CoD), and I think the weapons feel good. However, as has been the case probably starting at Ghosts onward, the maps are just too small for my liking. MW2 and BLOPS 2 had my favorite sets of maps, with a nice selection of super tight and more wide open arenas to suit a variety of play styles. The past few have just been a bunch of shoeboxes with a million entry points. Clearly some people enjoy this, but it caters to a play style that I just don't enjoy.

The beta is live now? I'm in the USA - Massachusetts

Thought it was starting tomorrow?

They officially go live tomorrow at 10am pt, but they put the servers live when they started sending out codes today. It is a easy was to ramp up server load while people slowly jump into the game. They did this for the BO3 beta but not for the IW beta...and the IW beta was a clusterfuck when it went live because the servers couldn't handle the load of hundreds of thousands of people jumping on right at 10am. It will make the servers much smoother come tomorrow.

There's no way these are dedicated servers. I like the game but my god the netcode right now is complete horsehit. I unload half a clip on my screen yet when I watch the kill cam I'm not shooting. Sigh.
