Gacha: Large marine mammal spends $1000 on Fire Emblem Heroes, still can't get Hector

edit: The Hector thirst is real. This other guy spent $1600 searching for Hector, and all of it is on video.

So there is a Reddit AMA up with a bona fide whale, who has spent $1000 on orbs so far and still has no Hector to show for it.

If you're unfamiliar with gacha madness here is an article on how it works.

And he's not even the biggest whale in the west. I don't know how much this other guy spent to get just one Hector, but it's probably more than the gross national product of some nations.

Hector is an SS Tier heavy armored axe wielding Lord from Fire Emblem: The Blazing Blade, colloquially titled Fire Emblem 7 by fans.

It's pretty crazy how hard the 'core' gamer crowd will take to dumb f2p stuff if you put a Fire Emblem or Fallout skin on it.

Such an exploitive business model and these people don't have anything to really show for it. At least trading cards or something would have actual value.

After a couple of resets I got him for my initial roll, along with four 4-star characters (I decided to keep that roll and link my account at that point). He's indestructible but can only move one space per turn, so kind of useless that way...

So the max barracks size is 500 and you start with 200.

If it's one orb per 5 characters to increase the barracks size so then it costs 60 orbs to fully upgrade the barracks.

Distant counter.

look. $1k is quite a sum for me, but when comparing it with other legendary incident like scathach or monkeygate, that is nothing

One Azura between those whales makes me sorta happy I was able to get that as my one (and still only, so many rerolls/additional pulls later) 5* unit.

But people love f2p.

Super Mario Run has this horrible price. It should be f2p too.

Right?

I love it, I spent $6 here and was not willing the spend any on Mario. This model lets you do what you want. I got what I wanted out of Mario and had no desire to see more, but I love how FE is going so far so I didn't mind throwing them some money. You can happily play the game with no money in, albeit at a slower pace.

#1 rule in gacha games is never go after a specific character, you'll never get it. The funny thing is that in a few months, they'll introduce some new characters that are all more powerful than the ones in the game right now.

The first time you read something like this it's shocking, but it's pretty much been the norm in F2P games for close to a decade. It's why so many MMORPGs went F2P

Nope. Staying away from this game. For my wallet's safety.

Unrelated, but has anybody made an album of all the artwork yet?

If you really want ONE character then do what normal people do and reroll thousands of accounts for 5 days straight till he drops. Sheesh.

This is why I figured Fire Emblem would do good. Obviously Fire Emblem fans are playing it on mbile, but I wonder if the mobile game will cause a Pokemon Go effect and bring lapsed gamers to the 3DS/Switch.

RNG is unethical...?

Yes it is, actually. It's quite possible thanks to RNG, that no one ever gets something.

As opposed to a physical randomized collectible item. There might be only 1 super rare card in 10,000. But it actually exists. Someone will get it. And in a lot of games, like collectible miniature games, if you buy a case you would be guaranteed to get all the miniatures.in a given set.

Beyond that, companies never tell you the odds of getting that item. Casinos are required to publish odds for their slot machines (and the rate has to be approved to the government). Why are gambling boxes in games treated differently?
