The new look at the upcoming Russian movie Guardians might be the craziest superhero trailer we’ll get all year.
The film tells the story of a team of heroes gathered during the Cold War to fight a supervillain whose march on Moscow is unstoppable — namely because the bad guy has been able to disable all machinery (rendering the military useless). The team of heroes is called the Guardians, and they each represent different nationalities of the Soviet Union, with the team putting aside their differences for the greater good.
The film, which is set for a 2017 release, is directed by Sarik Andreasyan and comes from Russian production company Turbo Films. It already has a sequel in the works.
We’re so used to seeing big-budget superhero films starring characters we know that it’s fun — and a little jarring — to see these unfamiliar faces. Let’s break them down.
Arsus
His power appears to be the ability to transform into a half-man, half-bear. Furthermore, Arsus (Anton Pampushnyy) has the ability to control how much of his body transforms into a bear, so there should be different man-bear combinations throughout the movie. Though from what we’ve seen, rather than a bear, he resembles a furry bodybuilder.
Ler
Played by Sebastien Sisak, Ler is shown manipulating rocks in the trailer. He can use the rocks to make him levitate, sort of like Magneto. Should we just call him Rockneto? Yeah, let’s do that. Rockneto it is.
Khan
In addition to having a Winter Soldier vibe, this guy (played by Sanzhar Madiyev) really likes his blades — and his aerial acrobatics. He also has superhuman strength and moves fast enough to make it appear that he is teleporting. But seriously, doesn’t he look a lot like Winter Soldier?
Kseniya
The trailer explains that these four heroes were experimented on to give them their powers, and Kseniya (Alina Lanina) is the last piece of the puzzle — with the others having already met up to figure out what happened to them. She has the ability to manipulate water and can even become invisible, thanks to those powers. For all intents and purposes, visually her powers are a lot like the Invisible Woman.
