The studio’s live-action Mulan movie is officially a go, Disney announced on Tuesday. Back in March 2015, news broke that Disney was weighing Mulan as its next live-action remake of an animated classic, and the studio purchased a script from Elizabeth Martin and Lauren Hynek. Since then, Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver rewrote that script, which is now billed as combination of the classic Chinese story and the 1998 animated film. Disney plans to soon launch a global casting search to find a Chinese actress to play the titular heroine. Mulan is one of the many, many properties that Disney is relaunching as a live-action movie. Having had success with female-led live-action fairy tales like Maleficent and Cinderella, Disney will next release Beauty and the Beast, starring Emma Watson as Belle and Dan Stevens as the Beast. Other planned projects include Cruella (starring Emma Stone as Cruella De Vil from 101 Dalmations), Tink (with Reese Witherspoon as Peter Pan’s fairy sidekick), and the just-announced remake of The Lion King. (Check out EW’s roundup of all the Disney remakes here.) Disney’s original animated Mulan hit theaters in 1998, with Ming-Na Wen voicing Mulan and Lea Salonga providing her singing voice. Mulan was based on the legendary Chinese ballad, which told the story of a skilled female warrior, and Sony is also reportedly planning a live-action Mulan of its own. Jason Reed, Chris Bender, and Jake Weiner are producing the new Mulan. It’s set to hit theaters on Nov. 2, 2018.
