It's the week of speculating about Star Wars: The Force Awakens hero Rey and where she came from! We've put forward our own suspicions, Daisy Ridley has said she thought it was obvious, but the best is yet to come.

Our new favourite, totally crazy theory is that Rey was hatched from an egg.

(Warning: Probably doesn't contain spoilers for Star Wars Episode 8, but you never know)

Before you give up on us completely, at least let us point out that Reddit user starwarsfanfrom77's idea is actually grounded in canon.

The theory goes that Max von Sydow's kind of pointless Lor San Tekka (the guy who dies in the first five minutes of The Force Awakens) was actually left on Jakku to watch over Rey like Obi-Wan Kenobi was watching over Luke on Tatooine. Which certainly fits the whole The Force Awakens being identical to A New Hope thing.

San Tekka was a member of the Church of the Force, a group dedicated to keeping the Jedi's ideals alive during the reign of the Empire. As part of his journeys, he stayed for two years on the planet Ovanis with a group called the Crèche (this is all detailed in Marvel's Poe Dameron comic).

The Crèche were dedicated to guarding a giant egg that they believed would one day hatch a galactic saviour.

A young woman with incredible Force powers, maybe?

The theory goes off on one about using genetic material from anyone who had touched Luke's old lightsaber (Anakin Skywalker, Luke, Obi-Wan and Han Solo), but the basic premise is hilariously supported by recent, in-canon stories.

And you thought that bit about the magical tree was weird.

Star Wars Episode 8 will arrive – with or without giant glowing blue eggs – on December 15, 2017.
