TUESDAY UPDATE, WRITETHRU with actuals: Disney/Marvel’s Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 2 took root in three more key offshore markets for the sophomore session, rocking out with a bigger-than-projected $126.1M in 55 total (vs $123.8M in the Sunday estimates). This lifts the intergalactic pack to $285M at the international box office and $431.5M globally through Sunday.
Among the major new plays this frame were China, Korea and Russia. In the Middle Kingdom, Peter Quill and pals scored a higher $49.3M launch (+$1.3M on Sunday’s estimate) that tops the original film by 75%+ for the 4th best Marvel Cinematic Universe debut ever in the market. Word of mouth is very strong on the James Gunn-helmed pic which has an 8.4 rating on Douban.
GOTG2 in Korea, meanwhile, has already outgrossed the lifetime of the first GOTG movie, and Russia landed the 3rd best start for an MCU title.
As it heads to $300M international and $500M worldwide in the next few days, GOTG2 has the added distinction of pushing the MCU over $11B. That covers combined global grosses from 15 films since 2008. The GOTG2 knock-on, plus the gorgeous Beauty And The Beast — which is closing in on $700M overseas thanks in part to a $60.7M perf in Japan — further has The Walt Disney Studios crossing $2B this weekend.
Elsewhere, Universal’s The Fate Of The Furious has raced past $950M on the offshore track, lifting to $955M and bringing the global cume to $1.162B to push the entire franchise past $5B and become Universal’s 3rd highest grossing film worldwide behind Jurassic World ($1.67B) and Furious 7 ($1.52B). Japan is also high on the high-octane actioner with $22.5M after 10 days to outpace all other Fast & Furious movies.
Also from Universal (and Blumhouse), Jordan Peele’s Get Out has crossed $200M worldwide. And, Indian pic Baahubali 2: The Conclusion continued its mega-play with an estimated $43.9M for $168.4M through Monday worldwide. It has become the first Indian movie ever to cross the local currency threshold of 1000 crore with 1120.
There were no major wide studio releases this frame — Alien: Covenant is next on deck beginning Wednesday in France.

HOLDOVERS/EXPANSIONS
GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY
Adding $126.1M internationally, Disney/Marvel’s latest has reached $285M at the offshore box office, with $431.5M worldwide. The major openers this frame were China, Korea and Russia to bring the full count to 55 material markets hosting Chris Pratt and the gang.
China opened at No. 1 with $49.3M and a strong 61% market share. This is the 4th highest MCU opening to date and is 75%+ ahead of Guardians Of The Galaxy, 42% ahead of Captain America: The Winter Soldier and 152% above Thor: Dark World. Word of mouth is strong, despite there having been no red carpet event locally. Pratt engaged with his Weibo followers, however, debuting the local poster when the release date was made official. There are some local pics on deck, plus Power Rangers and King Arthur: Legend Of The Sword debuting next frame.
Korea was also No. 1 with $13.3M, making it the 2nd highest opening weekend of 2017. The launch already outstrips the total run of GOTG1.
Russia was No. 1, too, with $11.6M and a very strong 84% market share. That’s the 3rd best MCU launch and is 45% above GOTG1 and 8% ahead of Captain America: Civil War. It’s bigger than the lifetime of Winter Soldier. Ukraine posted the 2nd biggest industry opening ever. India, despite heated local competition, jumped 82% over GOTG1 with $1.6M.
In IMAX, GOTG2 delivered $25M globally, with $12M overseas. This is the 4th best May opening weekend ever in IMAX. On 400 screens in China (the biggest ever), the James Gunn-helmed pic brought in $6.4M. Russia (+56%), Ukraine (+147%), Korea (+131%) and Argentina (+109%) were all up on GOTG1. Puerto Rico scored IMAX’s biggest opening of all time.
Worldwide, 41% of GOTG2’s gross is from 3D performances, including an estimated $72M from RealD equipped locations. The highest performing 3D countries internationally include China (99%), Germany (80%), Brazil (76%), Russia (52%), Hong Kong (43%), The Netherlands (90%), Colombia (85%) and Austria (85%).
In holds, GOTG2 saw slight dips in Finland (-20%), Switzerland (-30%), France (-37%), Chile (-39%), the Netherlands (-43%), Australia (-43%), Bolivia (-43%), Brazil (-44%) and Venezuela (-45%). Overall when looking at last weekend’s openers, the drop-off was 52%. That’s slightly ahead of Captain America: Civil War which dropped 55% for the same suite of markets in weekend 2.
Across Europe, the fall was 47% versus Civil War’s 59%. The movie held No. 1 everywhere except the Netherlands, Portugal, Turkey and Lebanon. The UK/Ireland, Germany and France are all tracking ahead of Civil War at the same point in releases.
The new film has already topped the original in Hong Kong, Indonesia, the Philippines, Taiwan and Thailand. China leads offshore, followed by the UK ($35.5M), Germany ($18.6M), Australia ($17.3M) and France ($16.2M). Japan will be the final release next weekend.
BAAHUBALI 2: THE CONCLUSION
The sequel to 2015 Telugu smash Baahubali added $43.9M per comScore this weekend; largely out of India. The staggering run of this film had already eclipsed all others to become the biggest Indian title ever at the worldwide box office last week.
It is currently in 10 offshore markets and domestically remained in the Top 10 this frame, dipping to No. 7 with $16.1M to date. Through Monday, according to local estimates, the global cume is $168.4M. At 1120 crore, that pushes it past the 1000 crore mark – a feat never before achieved by an Indian title.
THE FATE OF THE FURIOUS
Continuing its offshore drive, Universal’s Furious 8 zoomed past $950M at the international box office. The weekend is worth $30M in 66 territories to lift the cume to $955M. Globally, it’s at $1.162B, becoming Universal’s 3rd highest grossing film worldwide behind Jurassic World ($1.67B) and Furious 7 ($1.52B), having overtaken Minions ($1.16B) this frame. The full franchise has now grossed over $5B worldwide.
Japan is having a great second weekend with $4.1M at No. 2. The 10-day cume is $22.5M, outpacing all previous comers in the franchise. China’s weekend was No. 4 with $4.7M. This lifts the total to $385.1M (2.651B RMB).
The other top grossing territories are: Brazil ($37.4M), the UK ($35.5M), Mexico ($35.4M) and Germany ($29.9M). In Peru, TFOTF has become Universal’s highest-grossing title ever. International totals on all of the previous movies have been left in the rearview.
THE BOSS BABY
Fox’s release of DreamWorks Animation’s latest cashed out with another $18.7M in 76 markets this frame to fill the buggy with $280M at the international box office. Korea saw a big bow with $8.2M at No. 3. CJ is distributing there. The UK is closing in on $32M after another great hold in the 5th frame. Holland and Italy also saw small drops to cume $5.3 M and $6.5M, respectively. Mexico and France are further fun-sized plays at $22.7M and $22.3M.
BEAUTY AND THE BEAST
In its 8th weekend of play, Disney’s Beauty And The Beast plucked another $11.9M in rose petals from 38 territories. The offshore cume will top $700M this week and is currently at $698.1M. Globaly, BATB has grossed $1,185.7M. The Bill Condon-helmed film is now the No. 11 highest-grossing movie of all time, surpassing Captain America: Civil War and Minions this week.
Japan is on a tear, dropping just 16% in the 3rd frame to take the local cume to $60.7M after just 17 days. The weekend was worth $8.5M.
Holds are strong elsewhere late in the run, including in Chile (-34%), Belgium (-44%), France (-44%), Germany (-48%) and Australia (-48%).
Top markets are the UK ($88.9M), China ($85.8M), Japan ($60.7M), Brazil ($41.3M) and Korea ($37.5M).
GET OUT
Universal and Blumhouse’s Jordan Peele-helmed horror comedy crossed $200M at the worldwide box office this frame. The current weekend added several key offshore hubs with $8.7M in 47 total. The international gross is now $30.9M. France, where there has been a fair amount of real-life suspense over the presidential election, was tops among new openers. Get Out hit $2.5M in the hexagon, playing particularly well in Paris and the suburbs where it’s outperforming Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 2 in its 2nd session. It also has the best per-screen average in the market.
Elsewhere, Australia is off to a good start at No. 2 with $2.1M; Germany opened No. 2 behind GOTG2 and is on pace for $1.6M this weekend; and No. 3 openings are being seen in Belgium ($170K), Portugal ($61K), Switzerland ($243K), Panama ($307K) and Peru ($225K).
There are still 15 more territories to open including Russia and Argentina next weekend.
GOING IN STYLE
With $3.3M in the session, the Warner Bros comedy has now grossed $30M in international markets. It’s currently playing in 46 and notably opened in France this frame. There was a holiday Monday (which followed the presidential election that was decided Sunday) and the FSS start was $907K from 239 screens. That topped nearly all comps, more than doubling The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel and coming in 28% above Last Vegas. Italy opened to $312K from 150 screens. The UK continues to outrank all with $3.6M.

DANGAL
The Aamir Khan-starring Christmas release, a record-holder until Baahubali 2, wrestled its way into China this frame with a comScore reported $10.7M. It came in No. 2 in the market behind GOTG2. Through Monday, it had grossed $14.4M per local estimates.
THE SHERIFF IN TOWN
Winning the weekend in Korea, Kim Hyung-ju’s crime comedy captured $7.3M. From the producers of A Violent Prosecutor, the story sees an ex-cop disgraced by an ill-fated drug sting begin an investigation into the founder of a new beach resort.
