After integrating two big Disney brands — Marvel and the Muppets — with primetime series on ABC, can we expect a Star Wars series on the network anytime soon?
“As a fan, I would absolutely love to say yes,” ABC entertainment president Channing Dungey said about a Star Wars series during her executive panel today at TCA. “We have had conversations, and we will continue to have conversations with Lucasfilm. It would be wonderful to extend the franchise.”
Star Wars is being rebooted in a big way on the feature side at Disney with last winter’s Star Wars: The Force Awakens grossing $2.07 billion worldwide. It has stand-alone films Rogue One: A Star Wars Story opening December 16, Episode VIII coming in December 2017 and Han Solo and Boba Fett pics in the works.
Disneyland also is launching a Star Wars-branded attraction with construction underway on a 14-acre land formerly Big Thunder central.
On the TV side, ABC cable sibling Disney XD is prepping its animated Star Wars Rebels for Season 3 this fall.
