“We’re Hard to Beat”: Assassin’s Creed Shadows Developers Reveal Graphics Secrets and New Heroes

The creators of Assassin’s Creed Shadows revealed two pivotal aspects of the game’s development.

In an interview with GamesRadar, co-director Simon Lemay-Comtois observed that the studio finds few rivals when it comes to visual fidelity. Nine months after the game’s release, the team still highlights Shadows’ outstanding graphics—especially on PS5 Pro—and credits years of technical evolution and Ubisoft Quebec’s accumulated expertise.

The second point centers on the game’s two protagonists, Naoe and Yasuke. Lemay-Comtois explained that the decision to pit radically different playstyles against each other was intentional from the outset, and the studio believes it paid off. The developers say they would revisit a dual-protagonist structure in future titles if the narrative demanded it; such an approach, he added, expands the story and gives players greater freedom and variety.

He also acknowledged that a two-character system can split player opinion, as seen with Assassin’s Creed Syndicate. In Shadows the contrast between Naoe and Yasuke is more pronounced, which has intensified fan polarization — a trade-off the studio views as justified for delivering a novel experience.

The developer added that work on the characters allowed the team to refine movement, combat, and stealth systems that will underpin future entries in the series. Special attention was given to Naoe’s distinct identity and her ninja-inspired acrobatic moves, which the studio intends to carry into upcoming Ubisoft projects.
