Speaking to Polygon, Planet Centauri creator Laurent Lechat said the date was chosen essentially at random, and because Valve hadn’t revealed its plans beforehand the timing worked against them. He also noted that the game moved fewer units on its Daily Deal than it did when news of the wishlist bug first spread; the Daily Deal itself accounted for roughly 5,000 sales.
Lechat added that, while 5,000 copies might seem modest, those sales will meaningfully help the studio: they should provide enough runway for about a year and allow the team to finish their second game, which is currently in development.
Research estimates that more than 5,000 games released on Steam this year failed to earn enough to recoup the $100 fee required to publish on the platform.
