Tim Cain urges leaving mystery and undeveloped lore in games so players stay eager for sequels: “If you tell everything, players will want nothing”

Cain describes two approaches: one is to craft a mystery with abundant in-game clues that let players form plausible theories without ever being told outright. The other is simply not to develop certain lore at all — the team doesn’t define it, the game never references it, and players can’t discover the answer within that title.
