Take advantage of the relative calm the tutorial offers — you dodge basketballs and bop the school bully with a wiffle bat — because it evaporates quickly. After class lets out the streets fill with club‑wielding fiends, lunging zombies, and wolfish creatures. Luckily, as a hack‑and‑slash action RPG most foes are designed to be cleared out in groups.

It’s easy to compare Kingdom of Night to Stranger Things: the game leans on familiar horror tropes — Lovecraftian cosmic dread, spectres, and ghouls — borrowing liberally from both classic horror and modern nostalgia. That familiarity isn’t a fault; the title intentionally stands on the shoulders of genre greats and uses those influences to craft a convincing atmosphere.

I didn’t dig deep into the skill tree during my short session, but what I saw suggests real depth. The five classes — Rogue, Necromancer, Barbarian, Knight, and Sorcerer — along with varied gear and abilities, make multiple playthroughs feel worthwhile.

I came for the mood and I’ll be back for the gameplay. I’ve been playing hack‑and‑slash ARPGs since the original Diablo, and this spirited indie packs more punch than its size implies. Combine mesmerizing ’80s horror nostalgia with a haunted Arizona small town, and you’ve got perfect October fare. I don’t regret the half hour I spent with Kingdom of Night — and you probably won’t either.

If you want more scares, here are the best horror games available right now.
