This year has given us an embarrassment of riches in games — from quirky treats like House Flipper 2’s Scooby‑Doo DLC and oddball indie entries such as Cheese Rolling, CheeseCatToe and Cheese Racer, to the runaway conversation starter Clair Obscur: Expedition 33. Even Doug Cockle, best known as Geralt’s English voice, has been singing its praises.

I trot out the cheese jokes partly in jest, but 2025 has indisputably been shaped by Sandfall Interactive’s French‑styled JRPG Clair Obscur. The title has racked up an unprecedented number of award nods and became impossible to avoid in gaming conversations — lauded for rekindling interest in turn‑based systems and for its surprising impact on what some call the modern AA scene. It’s little wonder Cockle describes Clair Obscur as “a highlight of the year.”
