The TimeSplitters Remake Has Finally Arrived After More Than a Decade in Development

TimeSplitters Rewind is the long-awaited reimagining of the original TimeSplitters trilogy — the beloved first-person shooter series first released between 2000 and 2005. Begun in 2013, the project is now available to download from the official TimeSplitters Rewind website, and it’s completely free to play.

The protracted development timeline and free distribution are only part of what makes TimeSplitters Rewind remarkable. Built entirely by fans, the project brought together roughly 200 volunteers who contributed art, code, design and testing over more than a decade. After acquiring the TimeSplitters intellectual property in 2009, Crytek UK formally endorsed the fan effort in 2013 and provided original assets to help the team along.

Work on the remake wasn’t without turbulence: the team navigated engine changes, shifts in leadership, the cancellation of an originally planned PlayStation 4 release, and multiple close calls where the project nearly stalled entirely.

“Sorry it’s taken us so long,” the developers say on the TimeSplitters site. “We’ve only been making the largest free content video game ever.”

The build is substantial: TimeSplitters Rewind includes both online and offline campaign modes, cooperative play, 28 maps, 96 playable characters, 41 weapons, and numerous extras. Rather than reproducing the originals verbatim, the team aimed to distill the series’ spirit into a single reimagined package. The full narrative is playable now, but the release is labeled early access — further updates and refinements are planned.
