With artists releasing songs at a fast and furious pace, it’s difficult for the average hip-hop head to keep track of it all—no matter how tapped in they are. That’s why we created The Ones, a daily post to highlight the song you need to hear.
The insanely prolific Rochester duo, Rx Papi and Rxk Nephew, were once the best of friends. When asked about their relationship in a summer 2020 interview Nephew said, “We eat food at my grandma house on Thanksgiving then we go to his grandma house and eat too; that should tell it all.” Until suddenly, without an explanation, they were in a blood feud. Through last fall and most of this winter, the two released a string of diss tracks about how much they hate one another: Papi said he wouldn’t even give Nephew a blanket if he slept over, and Nephew claimed Papi and his girlfriend live in a dirty apartment with roaches and underwear on the floor. It was really dumb, but also kind of heartbreaking.
Now, for absolutely no reason, they’re back to being brothers. Their reunion was documented by extremely loyal fans on Instagram live, and on “60 Deep,” Papi and Nephew act like the last five months never happened. “Can’t turn my back on my brother,” raps Papi, even though his past behavior proves otherwise. He is followed by Nephew who gets punchlines off without a care in the world: “I’m in the street like potholes.” I’m confused. But, I suppose, beautiful friendships are beyond explanation.
