New Rap Song of the Day Big Yayas 1238

With artists releasing songs at a fast and furious pace, it’s difficult for the average hip-hop head to keep track of it all—no matter how tapped in they are. That’s why we created The Ones, a daily post to highlight the song you need to hear.

Big Yaya – “1238”

It’s way too easy to get lost on DJ Phat’s SoundCloud. The New Jersey curator is known for keeping an ear to the ground, following bubbling regional scenes and boosting artists across the country. On “1238,” Queens’ Big Yaya hops on a beat from EvilGiane that’ll leave your speakers growling. He and the rest of the Yellow Tape Boys crew don’t rap over the typical Brooklyn drill beats; their trademark style, “Yellow Drill,” is filled with flips of everything from Barbra Streisand to Lauryn Hill and fluttery instrumental arrangements. Big Yaya doesn’t sound uncomfortable for a moment. “I’m riding with Mr. Make Your Mother Cry/Why you call him that? ’Cuz he make your mother cry,” he snaps over the stuttering snares. It doesn’t matter what beat you put Big Yaya on; he’ll always find a way to make it feel like home.
