Hamaguchi says extra content was originally considered for Rebirth, but the team ultimately decided their priority should be completing the three main chapters before adding side content. In his view, ideas that qualify as DLC may be equally deserving of being expanded into full-game material.

A key factor will be the franchise’s cultural momentum by the trilogy’s end. Revisiting Final Fantasy VII has reignited interest from longtime fans and attracted newcomers, which Square Enix will likely want to leverage.

“With the conclusion of the Final Fantasy VII remake trilogy, there’s probably going to be a much wider audience for Final Fantasy as a whole,” Hamaguchi says. “Whether we bring another new DLC or a full title, that’s something we are actively considering.”

Ideas such as a Queen’s Blood project have surfaced, though Hamaguchi downplays any firm plans and stresses that things remain fluid. The series already has a history of spin-offs — from Vincent’s Dirge of Cerberus to other side stories — so expanding the remake trilogy’s tone and storytelling through new formats would be a logical next step. Characters like Yuffie or Nanaki could headline a focused adventure, but there are other intriguing possibilities too: a Barrett-led shooter, or a side-scrolling brawler pairing him with Tifa, for example.

Maybe I’m getting ahead of myself, but the possibilities are exciting. We’ll need to see how the landscape looks after the trilogy wraps — first Cloud lands the Omnislash, then whatever comes next, I’ll be ready.

Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth director thinks “Nintendo will put more effort into popularizing” the Switch 2’s controversial game key cards, which he calls “a really amazing new idea.”
