The document submitted on Sony’s behalf asserts that Tencent “and the entities it owns and/or controls have engaged in conduct that infringes SIE’s intellectual property,” and contends that Tencent’s legal defenses lack merit. “On all points, Tencent’s motion is meritless and should be denied,” the filing argues, and it recounts both Horizon Zero Dawn’s history and Tencent’s purported interest in producing a related title.
Sony says Tencent’s requests to develop an official Horizon game were refused: “SIE declined Tencent’s proposal.” According to the filing, Tencent moved forward regardless.
“Nonetheless, Tencent proceeded with its plan,” the response reads, adding that the similarities were so pronounced that numerous journalists and Horizon fans labeled Light of Motiram “a major Horizon rip‑off,” “an obvious knockoff,” and “a copycat,” with its lead character said to “resemble Aloy to a tee.”
Sony reiterates throughout the brief that Tencent’s alleged copying of Horizon’s protected elements—ranging from the protagonist’s likeness to the post‑apocalyptic world design—is both obvious and widespread. Although the 35‑page filing covers many specific points, the core request is straightforward: Sony asks the court to deny Tencent’s September motion to dismiss.
“For the foregoing reasons,” Sony concludes, “the Motion to Dismiss should be denied in its entirety.” The case’s next steps and any further response from Tencent remain uncertain, but for now Light of Motiram appears to remain in development.
