“While we will continue to pursue improvements, we have revised the near-term business outlook downward and recognized an impairment loss on a portion of Bungie’s assets.”
Recent months have been challenging for Destiny 2. Although a new expansion is due next month, third-party trackers show that PC player counts have been steadily declining, sometimes reaching historic lows. That trend has been accompanied by player frustration over the absence of a long-promised roadmap and the controversy surrounding the decision to remove the Edge of Fate expansion’s Unstable Cores currency after a backlash.
Bungie is also preparing a new shooter, but its launch path has been bumpy. Marathon was delayed earlier this year, following public criticism when an independent artist alleged that alpha test builds included assets taken from her work without compensation. Bungie confirmed it was “conducting a thorough review of our in-game assets, specifically those done by the former Bungie artist.”
During the same earnings call, Sony reiterated that development on Marathon is ongoing and stated that “we are fully dedicated to launching the title as scheduled.” The company added that it still expects the game to ship within the fiscal year and that the release is reflected in current forecasts.
In the meantime, check out our roundup of new games releasing this year and beyond.
