Sonic the Hedgehog Now Gives Driving Directions — That’s Irresponsible

Sonic the Hedgehog — long known for blistering speed — has officially joined Waze as a navigation voice. The collaboration was revealed in a post on the Google Blog, which kicked off the announcement with the exclamation, “Are you ready to be unstoppable!?!” Read the announcement.

The Sonic voice is offered in both English and French. According to Google’s post, Sonic delivers spirited directions and playful reminders (for example: “All right! Let’s roll! Keep your eyes on the road…”), adding a whimsical, game-like flair to turn-by-turn guidance. Drivers can also swap their map icon for Sonic’s Speedster Lightning from Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds, and choose the “Energetic” mood to match the character’s high-octane personality. More on the game is available at Polygon. Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds.

With the franchise’s 35th anniversary approaching, this crossover is part of a broader Sonic celebration; Sega’s press release teases that “fans can expect even more exciting announcements over the next year.” For now, fans can enjoy having the Blue Blur narrate their journeys — just remember to keep the “gotta go fast” attitude out of school zones.
