Shovel Knight: Pocket Dungeon drops this winter for Nintendo Switch

Shovel Knight: Pocket Dungeon, a falling-block puzzle adaptation of Yacht Club Games’ platformer series, launches sometime this winter on Nintendo Switch.

Shovel Knight: Pocket Dungeon got a breakout trailer during Wednesday’s Indie World livestream presentation from Nintendo. It’s the sixth sequel or spinoff in the franchise, which dates back to 2014. Shovel Knight: Pocket Dungeon, billed as a “roguelite puzzle game hybrid,” was announced in February 2020.

In a trailer shown with the game’s announcement, Shovel Knight is tasked with matching groups of enemies falling into place (a standard puzzle challenge) but he’s also part of the board himself. When Shovel Knight moves, the board changes. Clearing rooms leads him to new areas, some of which are procedurally generated. Shovel Knight series amiibo can be used to call in a “familiar fairy friend,” Yacht Club said.

The game features a Story Mode and a multiplayer Versus Mode. Yacht Club says 10 characters from the Shovel Knight universe are among the cast of characters.
