“Seeing so many colleagues stand with us and hold management to account is heartening,” said a dismissed Rockstar employee in the IWGB statement, noting that the firings came during a period when the company’s actions had left staff feeling intimidated. Rockstar has maintained that the dismissals targeted a small number of individuals found to be sharing confidential information publicly, adding the moves were unrelated to union membership.
Former staff and IWGB members reject Rockstar’s explanation. One ex-employee called the firings “a blatant, unapologetic example of union-busting.” The 31 dismissed developers were members of the IWGB and active on a Discord server used to coordinate union activity.
IWGB organiser Fred Carter described the move as an “Amazon-style” attack on union members, saying it represents unprecedented anti-union behavior in the games industry. Carter also highlighted that the company benefits from more than £440 million in UK tax relief while, in his view, showing disregard for workers’ livelihoods and legal protections.
The IWGB has not responded to requests for comment from GamesRadar+.
