Statement from Chris Swanson & Eric Deines, on behalf of Secretly Canadian:
We are heartbroken as we speak to have misplaced our pricey good friend, collaborator
and artist Richard Swift. He handed within the early hours of this
From the second he first got here into our lives within the fall of 2004, it
was clear he was a rarefied soul. It was Thanksgiving week within the
Midwest. We had been in Indianapolis with Jens Lekman, excited to be
internet hosting our Swedish good friend on his first journey to the States. At the
tail finish of a string of Midwest tour dates we had a pit cease at Luna
Music the place Jens did an in-store efficiency. As we had been searching the
CD racks there was one which stood out amongst the remainder; it was a
double-wide fatty 2xCD with a black & white image of a person that had
the mop of Dylan and the look of Cohen. In hand-laid typeface it mentioned
“The Novelist by Richard Swift”. It was good. I purchased it. Ben,
Jens & I listened to it entrance to again — each discs — on the journey again
to Bloomington. It was made by a lover of data, effortlessly
meandering via the historical past of recorded music, fusing sounds from
so many eras, his lovely phrases ceding pole place to the
lovely sounds, textures and emotions of a person who — we’d quickly be taught
— was steeped deeply in them. It was magic.
His wit, irreverence, expertise, and most of all his understanding of
true magnificence was immeasurable. That loss will depart a gaping gap in
our world from this second on. We are grateful he burned as shiny as
he did, and was as productive as he was, throughout his time with us.
Swift belongs within the canon of pressing, uncooked American artwork — alongside his
heroes like Walt Whitman, Bo Diddley, Captain Beefheart and Kerouac.
Through his music, illustrations, pictures and poetry, he created a
advanced, caustic and, most of the time, devastatingly humorous
private language and mythology. As a visionary producer, he turned
his Cottage Grove, Ore. studio, National Freedom, right into a harbor of
creative liberation for all measure of musician. Secretly Group household
such Damien Jurado, Foxygen, Lonnie Holley, Kevin Morby, Alex Cameron,
Sharon Van Etten, Gardens & Villa, Cayucas, and Trevor Sensor have all
created landmark recordings underneath the skills of Swift. To be allowed
entry into this singular Swift universe, to grow to be part of Swift’s
tapestry, his poem, is as near actual magic as you may get.
Looking again now, I see that we discovered a good friend within the bins that day in
Indianapolis. His household, buddies, music neighborhood and everybody who
liked him are in our ideas. Fingerpaint with the blackest ink you
can get your mitts into as we speak.
