Dan Houser: GTA, Red Dead Redemption, Rockstar, Absurd & Future of Gaming | Lex Fridman Podcast #484 – YouTube

He admits that another entry “probably will happen” — Red Dead is a massive franchise and he no longer controls the intellectual property. “I don’t own the IP. That was sort of part of the deal — it’s a privilege to work on stuff, but you don’t necessarily own it,” he explains.
It’s true the two Red Dead Redemption titles form a unified narrative, with the second game serving as a prequel to the first. Still, there’s room to explore different eras and protagonists, much like the GTA series, where each installment introduces a new lead and setting.
Whatever Rockstar chooses, expect a long wait: these games are increasingly ambitious and time-intensive to develop. For now, Arthur and John remain the defining faces of Rockstar’s Old West.
Speaking candidly, Houser said that making Red Dead Redemption 2 “wasn’t that fun” at times — it struggled to come together and ran so far over budget that he found it hard to think about.
