He admits he’s drawn to strong storytelling. By contrast, Pikmin 2 felt like a tonal shift: it sends you back to Earth to collect discarded items — even roaming through a bathroom — and introduces scenarios such as fleeing debt collectors, which didn’t land with the same emotional weight for him.

That description might undersell Pikmin 2 — it does return players to the species’ homeworld at points — but Cerny’s point stands: the original’s focused, urgent quest to rescue Olimar felt more affecting and cohesive.

His remarks coincide with renewed interest in the series. Pikmin 4 released in 2023, arriving roughly ten years after the third game and introducing a fresh wave of players to the charm of shepherding these little plant-like creatures. While there hasn’t been confirmation of another entry, many fans (myself included) remain eager for more Pikmin adventures, regardless of the setting.

A ruthless Pikmin tactic can let you finish the game in just three throws — but it demands some morally dubious choices.
