Every Pokémon in Pokémon Legends: Z-A belongs to one or two elemental types. Whether you’re new to the series or a long-time trainer, learning the type chart—which details each type’s advantages and vulnerabilities—takes practice but pays off in battle.

Use this guide to the Pokémon Legends: Z-A type chart to determine which moves will hit hard, which will be resisted, and which you should watch out for during fights.

Pokémon Legends: Z-A type chart — strengths and weaknesses explained

A Pokémon’s type dictates which opponents it can handle effectively and which poses a threat. For example, Totodile’s Water-type attacks are super effective against the Fire-type Tepig, dealing double damage. Conversely, those same Water moves are not very effective against Chikorita’s Grass typing and deal only half damage.

Most types have multiple matchups to consider. Water moves, for instance, are strong against Fire, Ground and Rock, yet are vulnerable to Grass and Electric attacks.

Dual-typed Pokémon complicate matchups. When a Pokémon has two types, incoming damage can be multiplied or reduced based on both typings. Scyther, a Bug/Flying Pokémon, is especially weak to Rock-type moves because Rock is super effective against both Bug and Flying.

Sometimes the two type modifiers cancel out. Charizard (Fire/Flying) takes normal damage from Ice moves: Ice is strong against Flying but weak vs Fire, so the effects balance each other.

Mega Evolutions are a special battle mechanic in Pokémon Legends: Z-A. Certain Pokémon can Mega Evolve mid-battle, and some Mega forms change the Pokémon’s type. For example, a Mega Evolution that turns Charizard into Fire/Dragon will alter which moves are now super effective or resisted—so keep Mega forms in mind when planning or responding to attacks.

Some type combinations mean certain moves simply do nothing. Ground moves, for instance, have no effect on Flying Pokémon. Below is a list of type interactions where moves have no effect at all:

  • Dragon moves have no effect on Fairy-types
  • Electric moves have no effect on Ground-types
  • Fighting moves have no effect on Ghost-types
  • Ghost moves have no effect on Normal-types
  • Ground moves have no effect on Flying-types
  • Normal moves have no effect on Ghost-types
  • Poison moves have no effect on Steel-types
  • Psychic moves have no effect on Dark-types

Knowing your Pokémon’s strengths and weaknesses is often the difference between victory and defeat. To maximize damage and minimize risk, field Pokémon with favorable type matchups against your opponent.

Memorizing every interaction can be daunting, so here’s a clear type chart to help you plan strategies and counter opponents effectively.
