Interplay left an outsized mark on role‑playing games, producing seminal titles such as Fallout, Wasteland, and The Bard’s Tale. Heineman is credited on Wasteland and The Bard’s Tale and spent much of her career in ports, adapting games to run on different systems.
Obsidian later created Fallout: New Vegas — widely regarded as a standout modern entry in the franchise — and went on to develop The Outer Worlds, a series that draws heavily on the spirit of early Fallout and Interplay’s design. The influence of Heineman’s work continues to be felt across contemporary RPGs.
Outside development, Heineman was also a competitive gaming pioneer — she won a national Space Invaders tournament in the U.S. in 1980. She died at the age of 62 after a cancer diagnosis earlier this year; her contributions and presence will be deeply missed.
