Veteran voice actor Nolan North — widely known for portraying Nathan Drake in the Uncharted series — says he only discovered that his Assassin’s Creed character, Desmond Miles, had been written out after a fan messaged him on social media.

Appearing on the Fall Damage YouTube channel, North was prompted to recall some of his most memorable lines. When the host played, “You know it’s true. It’s already started. I need to go do this now. So go!”, he instantly identified it as Desmond’s closing lines from Assassin’s Creed 3. “That technically was Desmond’s death scene,” North remembers. “And I didn’t know it.”

North says he reached out to the team, who attempted to reassure him. Ubisoft reportedly suggested “he’s not technically dead,” and North adds that the initial plan for the franchise was to follow Desmond’s arc across “eight or nine games.”

That long-term plan never materialized. “As so often happens in entertainment, new developers and creative leads come on board and take the story in different directions,” North observes.

He says he understood the change but still felt let down. “I was very sad to step away from the role of Desmond,” North admits. “Assassin’s Creed remains one of my favorite stories to have been part of.”

Assassin’s Creed fans reacted to reports of a canceled Civil War–era title that would have let players confront the Ku Klux Klan, arguing Ubisoft shouldn’t be “caving to the 1% of people who got in their fe-fes about Shadows”
