New World developers leave heartfelt tribute to players as Amazon begins sunsetting the fantasy MMO — “Thank you for so many stories”

New World: Aeternum

The note walks through countless moments players experienced in New World, emphasizing that the team watched and guided many of those memories. Then comes the truly poignant passage.

“Through it all, we watched. We delighted. We reveled in your enjoyment of every perfect moment, every carefully crafted story, and we even bore witness to the joining of two souls who met here in Aeternum,” the message reads. “We did it all for you, dear adventurer. Thank you for so many stories, triumphs, and fits of laughter.”

The note closes by commemorating four “fallen comrades”: Divya, Shaun, Kelvin, and Aaron. It’s a reminder that beyond corporate decisions are the people who build and inhabit these worlds — and when a game like New World shuts down, a lot of personal history goes with it.

Amazon says Aeternum will remain online through 2026, with a six-month window for any alternate arrangements — a small consolation for players whose lives were shaped by the game.

As New World dies thanks to Amazon, ex World of Warcraft lead thanks the devs who made it for “trying to keep the MMO dream alive” as he struggles with his own new MMORPG
