Mysterious Nintendo Teaser Has Pikmin Fans Who Waited a Decade for a Switch Comeback Ready to Lose It

Nintendo quietly uploaded a short film to the Nintendo Today app without any explanation — and the clip strongly suggests something new related to Pikmin.

The Nintendo Today app has been unpredictable since its debut earlier this year. One moment you’re scrolling, the next Nintendo drops an unexpected confirmation for a brand-new Splatoon title. Today the company posted an almost four-minute short called Close to You. The film follows a baby whose pacifier falls and begins moving around the room on its own; the infant chases it and, by the time the mother returns, has taken their first steps.

For instance, at roughly 0:25 — when the mother shuts the door and a building block tumbles — a short piano motif plays that matches the opening notes of the Pikmin main theme before diverging into a different melody. Those notes recur throughout the film, and the piano-driven phrasing is reminiscent of Pikmin scores. Additionally, a Reddit user pointed out that a melody heard near the end is a piano rendition of the tune Pikmin sing in an ad for Pikmin 4.

New “Close to You” video Nintendo posted has pikmin music in it: from r/Pikmin

The moving objects could be explained by scale — Pikmin are tiny (about an inch tall), so the baby might not notice them — but at 1:39 there appears to be a red Pikmin scurrying under the crib in the background, which some interpret as teasing an unseen or invisible Pikmin type.

Nintendo has a history of slipping Pikmin into other properties — whether as easter eggs in films or at theme parks — so this could be misdirection. And canonically, humans wouldn’t fit into the Pikmin timeline. Still, it’s tempting to read this as a deliberate hint: whether it’s a new Pikmin game or a Pikmin-related film, the short has certainly reignited excitement.

As Shigeru Miyamoto — often called the father of Mario — has reiterated: “I spent a lot of time the past 5, 6 years really wanting to grow Pikmin.”
