This massive undertaking began as an attempt to win a competition organized by his in-game clan. Although that specific event never materialized, the caskets continued to stack up. Pen Sir admits to only accidentally opening a single casket throughout the entire duration, though he did suffer a heartbreaking loss of 80 chests during a PvP mishap. “Avoid going AFK in the Wilderness,” he warns, a grim nod to the game’s ruthless player-vs-player territory.

“It’s been years since I’ve actually opened a clue, so the anticipation is through the roof,” he shares. “I’ve barely slept the past couple of nights—maybe an hour or two—just because I’m so excited to finally see what’s inside.”

For an Iron Man account like Pen Sir’s—where trading with other players is strictly forbidden—completing clue scrolls requires immense patience and the acquisition of rare items. However, it remains the ultimate benchmark for filling the Collection Log, the definitive metric for progress in an MMO that lacks a traditional “ending.” Based on his calculations, he anticipates adding roughly 500 new entries to his log, with a particular eye on the legendary 3rd Age equipment.

“I know many players aren’t fans of this specific item, but I’d love to pull 3rd Age vambraces,” he notes. “To me, wearing a world-class rare item that most people wouldn’t even notice is the most subtle, weird flex, and it sounds like great fun. Beyond the clue-specific loot, I’m also hunting for dusk mystic pieces, dragonstone armor, and the elusive evil chicken outfit!”

The prospect of finally cracking the seals feels “surreal,” he notes. To resist the urge to open them early, he turned to data. “The temptation was immense, but running simulations actually helped keep me disciplined,” Pen Sir explains. “I became somewhat obsessed, generating a new spreadsheet every week to project how many items I might receive. I even used a simulator on oldschool.gg to cross-reference my data models.”

It is a monumental feat of patience, though as Pen Sir points out, “Everything in OSRS is essentially one long-term grind.” While most of these rewards were gathered as a byproduct of other goals, they eventually snowballed into a legendary loot haul that has captured the community’s imagination. This is simply the beauty of a game that rewards player-driven milestones in such historic fashion.

MMO community stunned as player cashes in 8 years of grinding to set an untouchable record in just 60 seconds.
