The block-based sandbox remains hugely popular across a wide range of platforms.
Guinness World Records recently updated its “Best‑selling video game” entry. According to the revised listing, that distinction now belongs to Minecraft.
Reports indicate that more than 350 million copies of the blocky sandbox have been sold:
Minecraft began as a free alpha in May 2009, with the full 1.0 release arriving in 2011. On October 15, 2023, cumulative sales topped 300 million copies, making it the first video game to reach that milestone.
By comparison, Grand Theft Auto V (2013) has sold in excess of 215 million copies.
