Mario Kart meets Super Mario Maker on Steam — a racing game where you build courses as you drive: “I’ve lost hours testing my game”

Ever wished Nintendo would apply the Super Mario Maker idea to its other franchises — for example, letting players craft their own Legend of Zelda dungeons or Metroidvania maps? An upcoming Steam title takes that concept to kart racing, offering tools to build your own tracks as you play.

Mythic Kart Racer is immediately easy to grasp: it’s a third-person kart racer that blends the arcade feel of classic Super Mario Kart with the charm of Mario Kart 64, including drift-based boosts. What really stood out was how the course almost paints itself beneath your wheels as you drive.

The game’s Steam page describes the core idea as creating a course while you race, using your kart like a brush — an intuitive approach that produces tracks that feel natural to drive. The developer adds that playtesting can be engrossing, so remember to step away occasionally.

The developer says Mythic Kart Racer pulls inspiration from the finest elements of other karting classics — a certain bandicoot, a celebrated plumber, and even a speedy, spiky mascot — but stresses that the Mythic universe and its physics are unique.

They’ve also confirmed plans for an overhead editor in a future update, according to a comment on Reddit.

No official release date has been announced yet. The team plans to launch in Early Access “when it’s ready,” and estimates the Early Access period will last at least one year after release, possibly longer depending on development progress.

Nintendo aims for Mario Kart World to be a Switch 2 title players will keep coming back to for years — similar to Mario Kart 8 Deluxe — which could also indicate future DLC plans.
