Bawo – “Don’t Lie on My Head”

Content

There is something serene about Bawo’s music. On “Don’t Lie on My Head,” a standout from his Live & Let Thrive EP, the London rapper embraces the difficulties necessary to reach a goal: “This bus don’t go to the top of the mountain/What you gonna do? Jump out then (jump out).” As he contemplates his journey, he drops asides filled with adroit wordplay: “It’s not that, it’s dis-missed/In other words, off target.” When he finally gets to the sung hook, you feel as if he’s traveled far to receive its  wisdom: “Please don’t lie on my head but go ahead and say what you need to/And if you’ve gotta lie on my head, it best be only when you need to.” Mirroring this tension, the production commences with gentle keys, only to move into UK garage territory with skittering percussion and pulsating bass. Bawo finds calm within its storm.

With artists releasing songs at a fast and furious pace, it’s difficult for the average hip-hop head to keep track of it all—no matter how tapped in they are. That’s why we created The Ones, a daily post to highlight the song you need to hear.
