Light and Shadow: Expedition 33 Sets Another Record

Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 — Five Million Copies Sold and a Standout Game Pass Debut in 2025

Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 has exceeded five million copies sold and has emerged as one of the most-played Xbox Game Pass titles of 2025. In a post on Xbox Wire dated December 3, 2025, Microsoft called Expedition 33 “the biggest new third-party game launch” on Game Pass this year — a designation based on how many players tried the game during its first 30 days on the service, though the company did not disclose exact player counts. The title’s Game Pass success highlights one of the subscription’s biggest strengths: lowering the barrier for players to sample games outside their usual preferences. “The turn-based RPG genre has a lot of fans but sometimes it might put people who prefer more real-time action games off, but Game Pass lowered that barrier of entry,” said Sandfall Interactive creative director Guillaume Broche. He added that many curious players began exploring Lumière and the game’s opening chapters, discovering depth and enjoyment they hadn’t expected.

Momentum for Expedition 33 shows no sign of slowing. The game collected major honors at the Golden Joystick Awards in November and went on to secure 12 nominations at The Game Awards — a record tally that set a new benchmark for indie entries at the ceremony.

A free content update is also planned soon, introducing fresh environments, new enemy archetypes, and challenging boss encounters. “I think fans will enjoy having these new moments with their beloved characters,” Sandfall COO and producer Francois Meurisse told Polygon when the update was announced.

Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is currently available on PlayStation 5, Windows PC, and Xbox Series X.
