Kojima and Okamoto aren’t alone in debating generative AI’s place in games. Veteran Final Fantasy composer Nobuo Uematsu recently said he’s never used AI and likely never will, calling it unrewarding, while Arc Raiders lead Patrick Söderlund has argued that games “can’t be built by an AI” and expressed hope they never will.
The consensus across much of the industry seems to be that AI can streamline mechanical or repetitive work, but it lacks the human intuition and creative risk-taking essential to meaningful game development.
