Gamers often enjoy debating titles online nearly as much as playing them. Every so often a question comes up with an answer so obvious it’s hard to contest: Doom II’s Super Shotgun stands out as the greatest FPS weapon. Even Doom legend John Romero doesn’t mince words about it.
The Twitter post from the relaunched Apogee Entertainment account asked a simple question over the weekend: “What’s the most satisfying weapon in gaming history?” Given who asked, many replies highlighted classic FPS arms — Half-Life 2’s Gravity Gun, Doom’s BFG, the Quake railgun, and others.
There’s a little of the “Obama awards Obama a medal” vibe to Romero picking a weapon from his own game, but the vote is consistent. He answered a similar prompt in 2023 naming the Super Shotgun the “most iconic weapon in gaming,” and he’s even told a fan that “the super shotgun is the GOAT.” With a résumé like that, it’s tough to argue with the man who helped shape the genre.
