How to Get a Free Mewtwo in Pokémon Legends: Z-A Using the New Mystery Gift

As the season of giving arrives, Game Freak is spreading the cheer: players can now claim a complimentary Mewtwo—along with both Mega Stones—in Pokémon Legends: Z-A.

Starting today, the Mewtwonite X and Mewtwonite Y are available through Mystery Gift. Claiming them triggers a short side mission that leads to an encounter with Mewtwo in Lysandre Labs, and you’ll have the opportunity to add it to your party. The side mission becomes accessible only after you’ve completed the main story of Pokémon Legends: Z-A.

Mewtwo has been a cornerstone of the series since Generation I and has returned through numerous events and appearances over the years, including in titles like Pokémon X and Y. Even if you already have a Mewtwo stored in Pokémon Home, Pokémon Home isn’t compatible with Pokémon Legends: Z-A yet, so this distribution will be the surest way to secure a Mewtwo in Lumiose for now.

While it may not match November’s Mystery Gift—which resurrected a Pokémon absent for nearly a decade—receiving a powerful Mewtwo for free is still a major advantage, especially with the Mega Dimension DLC launching on Dec. 10. You’ll want every strong companion available once level caps and progression drive Pokémon well past the 100 mark.

If you haven’t used Mystery Gift before, our guide explains the process. Mystery Gifts unlock relatively early in the adventure, and several launch-era giveaways remain obtainable—such as a Ralts holding a Gardevoirite.
