Over the past few weeks, Helldivers 2 players have been channeling their inner Spartan — openly defying High Command to liberate a world that feels a lot like Halo: Reach. Both settings include a New Alexandria and suffer from alien infestations, and what began as a rebellious player campaign has now been marked with an official holiday.
According to the game’s social feed, “The planet Seyshel Beach was liberated earlier this week following a long and concerted campaign by a small but inexplicably dedicated group of Helldivers.” Residents voted to commemorate the victory by naming the liberation day “Avengement Day.”
Sound familiar? A dedicated faction of divers fixates on reclaiming a planet on the opposite side of the galaxy from High Command’s active Major Orders, facing overwhelming odds and chasing a single obsession.
It echoes the Malevelon Creek incident — the game’s most notorious example of player-driven role-play — when thousands of players nearly derailed other Major Orders to capture an unrelated world. Collective momentum and in-game propaganda can be powerful motivators.
High Command has admitted that New Alexandria holds no real strategic value in the fight against the Illuminate — who, if you squint, serve as a thinly veiled analogue to the Covenant.
The official Halo account even joined the joke, sharing a Reach-inspired “Remember Beach” image to celebrate the moment. View the post on X.
